Flotilla 1309 conducts a wide variety of on-the-water activities geared toward public safety.

Activities include:
Safety Patrols - Designed to assist the boating public
Search and Rescue - Searching for overdue/missing boaters
Marine Domain Awareness - Eyes and ears of Homeland Security
Environmental Protection - Searching for source of pollution

All of these activities are accomplished so that the American people can be assured of safety on the water and that their lives and property are not jeopardized.

Operations is a demanding activity where qualified Auxiliarists use their knowledge, skills and facilities in an active and satisfying manner to accomplish their missions. To assist the maritime public and to support these activities, Auxiliarists on land provide communications about waterway dangers or problems, overdue vessels and other official communications with Station Jones Beach.

On the water, Auxiliary vessels under orders are marked with patrol sign-boards bearing the red slash of the Coast Guard and fly the distinctive Coast Guard Auxiliary red and white Patrol Ensign. While under orders the privately owned Auxiliary facility becomes a Coast Guard facility and is no longer simply a civilian vessel.

Nationally, there are over 38,000 Auxiliarists who operate over 8,700 vessels and 190 aircraft. Auxiliarists under government orders assist vessels valued over $200,000,000 each year. All of this is accomplished while conducting 31,000 safety patrols, 3,000 regatta patrols and 1,500 air patrols. The Coast Guard Auxiliary is the largest force in the Department of Homeland Security.
